i basically have two round columns on my front porch and then the wood railings that are in between them - but lately i noticed that the wood railing is coming away from these columns - almost like the glue or something has worn off - is there something i can do about this? if so what should i look for at my local hardware store
i assume just some kind of locktight glue then just paint over the work area?

If the rails are coming away from the colums and you cannot see any type of attaching device, then I would say the rails were not put in to local code to start with. Some people think that rails are purely cosmetic, most areas require rails to be functional also. There are a lot of hidden issues here, what type colums (plain round, or fluted), how are the top and bottome rails shaped? All of these have to be considered before proper attachment of the wood rails to any columns. Please--more information, pictures, and we can help you better. Thanks, David
It looks to be a 1/2" piece of wood. A little flimsy for a railing that doesn't seem to be connected too well to the column.
Try going over the top with something more appropriate for the job. The thicker wood will give you a place to apply mechanical fasteners.
