Fix/restore base of door by staining?

The base of door frame has lost some luster and showing grey from traffic through it.

What's the best option for improving or restoring its look? Staining it?

Will staining it fix or hide the greying traffic marks? Maybe use a darker stain if original stain color not enough?

Or do something else, like painting it some color instead of staining it?

Sanding will get rid of the greying. So sand, stain and 3 coats of exterior varnish with some mica sand in the top coat to prevent slippage.
