fireplace hearth size

I have an old stone fireplace and am redoing the hearth. My question is how far in front of the open fireplace opening must the hearth extend. I live in Ontario Canada. Thanks

There's no "one size fits all" criteria. Also, local code may dictate the size of the hearth, though I doubt it.

Our fireplace mantel is 5' high and 7' wide. The hearth runs the full width of the mantel, and extends out 20". I really like the way it looks.
