We are buying a house w/gas fireplace surrounded by marble tiles. BORING!
I would like to use a rock veneer and put in built in shelves around it. Does the tile have to be removed or can we veneer right over it?

I would suggest removing the tiles. Marble, especially if polished, won't give enough "bite" to hold stone veneer. Actually, you may have to install cement backer board first. Stone can get pretty heavy and if put over an improper substrate, it can fall off.

Yes, the tile definitely would have to come out. What type of rock veneer? Manufactured or natural?
