Question

Fireplace door insulation?

Howdy folks.. I recently purchased a fireplace door/screen assembly for my fireplace. Installation should be very straight forward however my fireplace has a stone facade that makes for an irregular surface.. This in turn leaves gaps between the door frame and the face of the fireplace. Would it be ok to put some R-30 insulation between the frame and the facade to fill in the gaps or would that be a fire hazard?

The installation booklet said to use Owens Corning RA-28 insulation if you wanted to use more than they supplied however I can not find it locally. Apparently RA-28 is an appliance insulation used in ovens and refrigerators and such.

Any other recommendations would be much appreciated (short of ripping it all out and doing it the correct way).

Happy new year!
Jerid
