Finishing a Picnic Table

Looking to finish up my picnic table tonight or tomorrow evening. Would like to have it ready for Saturday. I am not sure how to finish it. Stain, Paint, water sealer, etc?

Should I give it a good sanding? Can I just use sandpaper? How many coats should I apply and how long to wait until it dries?

Thanks

Second that, if you used pt probably should let the wood dry out before staining it. It can still be used for the weekend, i'd throw a table cloth over it to protect it some from juice stains, etc...

Actually not sure what kind of wood it is. It was a kit from Kents Hardware store. Comes with all the supplies, materials and instructions to assemble it. Haven't had a chance to fool around with it yet so I am not sure if it explains further in the manual.
