Family Room

I have a family room that used to be a two car garage (one car in front of the other). Somewhere down the line someone converted part of the garage into a small family room (sheetrock on top of concret) with a bathroom (cement walls). The problem is that this room is always freezing. The people who lived there before us put in an electric wall heater to warm it up but you can't keep that on at all times. Anyway we cannot use this room because it is way too cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. I would like to know what my options are to get this to be a usable family room. Does anyone have any suggestions that would not cost an arm and a leg?

Insulation is the key, but insulating an already built room can be difficult and expensive. Is there any access to top or sides behind the finished walls?? Are the walls framed, or is there no space behind drywall?? If there is a space, insulation can be blown into that space thru small holes in the drywall. Not as expensive as tearing out walls.

Need more info: type and location of heat accessible in main house, or furnace in garage, is the garage floor the same level as house, is a window needed, what is your budget, and how skilled are you (or contract it all out)? And as Just Bill said. Be safe, GBAR

If you can make a hole in an exterior wall you could install whats called a ptac unit. It's an all in one unit that heats or cools. You'll see them in hotel rooms. There are also mini ptac units. The larger ones can heat and cool pretty large areas. They run on 220 volt power supply.
