Electric weedeater hot

I run my 5.5 amp weedeater from a house outlet for about 15 minutes until it gets extremely hot. The extension cord is an outdoor rated 12-3 and 40 feet long. No problem with clogging or air venting. It worked great the first two summers, so why does it overheat?
