DIY easy countertop help

Okay, please be patient here, I'll try to descibe everything the best I can. My dad moved out and left our countertops unfinished. I'm an arts and crafts kinda girl, so I am trying to come up with a cheap countertop alternative. I'm thinking about doing mosaic style. I have tons of broken plates and glass to use as the tile. I want to know what I need to do to prep and seal and any other useful advice. Right now we have what I think is called compressed wood? Do I just mortar over that, place tiles, grout, and then seal? I've never done anything like this, help is appreciated

There is a time and a place for artistic and inventive.
The kitchen counter top is really not one of them.

You want a smooth and easy to clean surface that will resist filth and germs.
That's why plain vanilla Formica remains the default low budget choice.
As to that compressed particle board stuff... no! Get real plywood and start over.

The next bit of truth is that almost every town in the country has a "top shop" who
can make your new countertops for about what the materials will cost to do it yourself.
Find one of them in your town.
