Diagonal Furring Strips.

Hi. I have been searching and searching for information regarding diagonal furring strips. I want to install siding vertically, and am avoiding horizontal installation of the furring strips. I've read that the diagonal strips should be 12 inches on center. Why is this and not the traditional 16 inches when installed vertically?

Thank you

I'm just guessing here, but I think diagonally 12" on center will give you the required backing for screws/nails. you generally want fasteners about every foot

I'm guessing, too. But the Hypotenuse of a 12" right triangle is approx 17 inches. 12 squared + 12 squared = 288. Sq Rt of 288 is 16.97. So your nails will end up close to 16OC.

What type siding are you installing?
