Deck Care

The home we just bought has a deck off the kitchen that is covered in carpeting. I'd like to have the deck replaced next year but for this summer I was thinking about getting rid of the carpet. I want to pull it up and pressure wash the wood but then I was wondering what I should do?
Should I paint it or just treat it with some kind of Thompson's product to get through the season?

It probably would be easier to rip off the old wood steps, and replace with new units. At the worst, you may end up having to replace the whole deck, depending on the age.

I heard that Thompsons water seal is mostly wax. seems a lot of people agree that it gets worn off too quick because it sits on top. Maybe an oil stain would be better. It soaks into the wood.

clean and stain

I would clean it...then protect with a semi-transparent stain. If the wood is in really bad condition, you may even want to use a solid or opaque stain. I like Cabot's stains ...but there are other good ones out there.
