decal on varnished wood

I have a varnished box with a decal on top. Anyone know how to remove the decal without harm to the varnish?

I removed a decal from a bureau using a very small amount of water to get the decal wet

This method may depend upon what the decal is made from
I think mine was "paper" based

WD-40
But I'd try a dab on bottom or the back of the box, because while WD-40 is normally not that aggressive it contains 50% hexane (similar to kerosene)
.

If the decal is under the varnish, you would have to dissolve the varnish to get to the decal.
