De-icing Trex decking safely - How?...Tips?

Hi all. I am new to this so excuse any mistakes. I own a new home on a lake in Mass. I have a trex floored deck with stairs off my kitchen. I leave the snow and ice alone until it is warm enough to remove with a plastic shovel. My problem is the stairs. They are on the north side of the house and with the humidity in the air they are either wet or iced up every morning. I do not want to use chemicals to deice for fear of hurting the lake or the trex. It sometimes takes days for it to melt enough to be removed without damaging the trex. Anone have any ideas?

I was thinking of putting electric ice melts used on roofs or freeze tape for water pipes under the step treads. I am worried about damaging the trex.

How about keeping a pail (with a lid) full of sand near the steps. Sand would give you good traction and shouldn't harm the Trex as people probably bring sand up there naturally on their shoes and bare feet all summer anyway.
