crack in my foundation
 

Hi i have a crack in my founation from the floor to the ceiling, does any one have adsvise on how to correct the problem from inside the house and insure it wont leak.

Easiest thing would be to call in professionals. There are a number of ways to do it. The big box stores sell stuff. pros will tend to use higher grade urethane epoxies that are injected in the crack.

has one side shifted up or down from the other side?? Has the footing also cracked?? Is this over where a gas line,sewer line,water line would enter the house?? Is the 'floor' cracked there too? like a fault line entire length or width of house?? What part of the country?What kind of soil do you have??subsoil?where this wall 'sets' on,that deep??

Interior remedies are relatively short term solutions. Cheap, but short term. In a previous house I had leaks from a few cracks every time there would be sustained rains over a period of time. Since the basement was unfinished, it wasn't too much of an issue. My solution was to hammer drill out the crack from top to bottom and install water plug hydraulic cement.
The repair lasted 8 1/2 years. I did it again at that point and it lasted until I sold the house 6 years later. The house was built in 1938.
If that time frame is okay with you, do that. But you need to do the repair correctly. If you don't, it won't last at all.

Exactly what does the crack look like?

1. Is it more or less vertical or is it about a 45 degree line?

2. How wide is it? (approx.) -hairline 1/32", 1/16", 1/8"- Is the width about the same from top to bottom?

3. Is it near the center of a section of the wall or at the edge of a window?

4. Has there been any movement or displacement between the 2 sides of the crack(up/down, in/out, etc.)?

5. How old is the foundation?

6. How old is the crack and hasit changed?

Without these answers, all you will get is guesses or uninformed opinions.

A hip-shot guess is that you have a poured basement with a very common shrinkage crack. These are not structural and can be fixed easily with the traditional, proven hydraulic cement or try epoxy if you are adventurous. In either case the preparation is very important.

Shrinkage cracks or more cosmetic and you may not have any leaks if you have good waterproofing on the exterior and a good drain tile system.
