cleaning with microfiber cloths

is there a correct (and so many incorrect) types of microfiber cleaning cloths? We've got a friend that swears they've got scratches in their stainless steel (SS) appliances and ceramic cooktop thanks to microfiber cloths.

i thot microfiber, if clean, was suppose to NOT scratch or at least scratch less than paper towels or cotton.

Can both of us be correct or wrong?

Any dirty cleaning cloth can scratch. Washing will not necessarily remove all the grit. That's what scratches. Not the microfiber. Same principle with washing cars as washing SS appliances.

I LOVE my microfiber cloths but I use them according to task (ie. I don't use one on counters or glass that have been used on the floor). They come in more than one color, so mine are color coded.

Is your friend sure that those are scratches and not just streaks/smears?

I don't see how a microfiber cloth, even if there was some particles lodged in it, could scratch ceramics.

Thanks. I am going to go and look at the problem/scratches.

I am also being asked now whether anyone has seen microfiber cloths scratching plastic. It seems they were using them on their car as well as within its interior until they noticed scratches on the inside as well as on their appliances.
