can anyone give me advice on changing out a drop ceiling to a normal ceiling. i recently bought a house that has an entire floor of drop ceiling tiles and i want to change it. i have about a 10" space b/w the upper floor joists and the tiles. Please help. I have no real idea of how to do it.
One of the reasons they put drop ceilings in is because of electrical, plumbing, hvac ot other obsticles hanging below the floor joists so you will have to see whats up there to see if its vesible or not.
i know there is a couple plumbing pipes running across but they are small and attatched to the bottom of the joists of the upper floor. But there is still plenty of room below it. The only thing is about how to support the ceiling. obviously i can't just nail it up to the joists. so i guess i'm going to have to create a subfloor. any thoughts?
Strap it with 1x4 (if thats enough to clear your water pipes) 16" o/c in oppisite direction of your joists.and screw them in.You may have to go with 2x4 but either way just strapping should do the trick.
You may not need a permit but they will probably tell you you will need a electrical permit for moving any boxes and wiring so give them a call.
