cement board over brick fireplace

Hi,

We are doing renos on our 1957 house and part of that is a fresh look for the fireplace. The original bricks are solid but look rough. So, we decided to put these tiny tiles over them. The tile installers say the bricks are too rough for the tiles to go on flat. They require that we put up cement board over the brick and they will apply the tiles to that.

How can I mount the cement board to the brick and mortar with enough strength to carry the weight of stone tile? Do I just screw the board down with some concrete anchors? Are certain kinds [ie tapcons?] better for this kind of thing?

Thanks,
Brian

This is tile prep that the tile guys should be doing as part of the job. That aside, this is a two step process. I would thinset the cement board to the brick and then tapcon the cementboard to the surface. This would be the same procedure as applying it to the floor.

I would just do a scratch coat over it to smooth it out using regular mortar and a bonding agent.
