I recently completed a small section of fence and a gate that run between my house and garage under a breezeway. It is built of cedar except for a small amount of pine molding around the posts. It looks good to me now, but I am worried about how well it will withstand the elements. Also, some of the cedar is dark, some medium and some a light color. I am thinking that I should use a semi-tranparent stain on it to even out the colors and to protect it from the weather.
Nice job by the way, I’m no painting expert but I eat more Cedar Dust than anything else.
IMO as far as stains for Cedar goes #1 Sikkens $$$, #2 Cabots $$, #3 all the rest $$-.
Personally I like to oil my Cedar and bring the natural color out. To pull that off on a project like yours you should have mixed up the different colors of wood a bit. Even with a semi transparent stain you’ll notice the left is darker than the right.
If you were into a slight remodel to balance out the colors of the wood better and made the arch the same color as the sides and oiled it you’d be looking at art.
