Catasrophy avoided!

I had a rather long post written explaining the how, what and where of this. Somehow I lost it.

This is the short version. Please, for the love of god, check out the people you hire to work in your house. The handyman/new contractor with the lowest price isn't your best choice.

Original "contractor" left the job. Nowhere to be found. My electrician pulled this down from the top of a foil coated duct. What ticked me off was that if he hadn't decided to rewire this guys hack job, it would have been my liability on the line.

I have no doubt, at least in my mind, that at some point this house would have burnt down, possibly with the young family of three inside.

You labeled that correctly.

Catastrophe indeed.

That is scary just to look at
As I get requests for handy service, I look at the work requested and listen to the homeowner. If I feel that the scope of work is outside of my skillset I will let the owner know and turn the job down.
If I will not do the work in my house, why would I do it for a stranger?

Nice catch by your electrician 12penny. Glad it was discovered and fixed before it was too late. Good advice about verifying CG credentials before working on your house.

That's the whole thing. If he hadn't decided to rewire as opposed to fixing obvious problems, he wouldn't have found it. This is going to cost me a lot if beer.

Worth every ounce, just for the peace of mind.

Good job - definitely don't always assume the work will be done correctly - it's on the owner to keep tabs on things.
