Can I pull a blanket type siding permit?

I have plywood siding t111 and my location requires a permit. The problem is i don't know exactly which pieces I'm going to replace. I won't know until I start prepping the surface for painting. How does the permit process normally work for just siding? Do I have to state in a diagram which side of the house I will be doing the work on or can I just pull a permit that states siding? I will then show the inspector which pieces I replaced. I'm not sure either if they need to inspect the framing prior to putting on the siding to see that it is in good condition.

Each city will be different. Some don't require a permit at all, some do. You need to call them and ask.

In my area you would not need a permit but in areas near me there are areas considered "historic" which are tightly regulated as far as matching original siding materials.
