Can I drain water into decommissioned septic?
Before we bought our house, the previous owners decommissioned the septic and switched over to town sewer.

Assuming that the septic was filled with a drainable fill, it is ok to drain water into the decommissioned septic?

I am thinking water from a dehumidifier, possibly a laundry sink and maybe one day a sump pump.

Is this legal? Do you think it would work?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The dehumidifier and sump pump shouldn't cause any concern. In fact most municipalities don't want that kind of process water in their sanitary sewer systems. Especially sump pump drainage. Most municipalities that have sewer systems also have ordinances against on lot waste water processing. The laundry sink waste would be considered gray water and would likely raise some eyebrows. Your local sewer authority would have the real answers.
You should check out the tank before you try to use it. Around here, tanks that are decommissioned are supposed to be filled with something to prevent their ever being used again.

The same here. The local Health Department sends someone out to witness the tank filled, then signs off on this. This paperwork is recorded at the courthouse on proper paperwork (plats?). David

it would be so smart to grey water to your old septic instead of the cost of processing by the treatment plant. effisient, cost effective, green thinking just plain good sense so they probably wont let you do it :whistling2:

Where are you located ?
All depends upon why they hooked up to Town sewer
In many cases part of the system fails & its less $$ to connect to Town sewer
In other cases connection to Town sewer is required due to environmental concerns
