Cabinet sanding & restaining

I have a 70's house with all dark wood trim and cabinets. I have painted all the trim and molding in the house white and now working on the bathroom vanity. I want to sand the vanity and built in towel cabinet and restain not paint. I have sanded down a couple of the doors and one has a black spot that doesnt seem to want to sand out. What is the black spots and how do I get rid of them? Can I stain my built in cabinet and leave the trim around it white? Thanks

The dark spot is likely a knot. If so, you can't sand it out. I can't tell without a picture. As far as the painted trim and stained cabinet question goes, that is up to you. My preferences would be to have the trim and the cabinet stained. However, sanding the trim would likely be difficult.
