Better way of connecting cable loop to roller chain?

Our garage door opener, roller chain to cable connection, via #40 Roller Chain Connecting Link, which looked something like this:

I replaced the cable which broke after 20 years. I purchased a replacement connecting link from Sears. Well that connecting link lasted about a day and then just popped right open. The clip was in the groove. Not much more I can do.

Is there some other better way of connecting the cable loop to the roller chain?

Better way of connecting cable loop to roller chain?

As I recall, isn't the flat cover for the pins slightly embossed? You may have installed that half incorrectly before the spring clip. Look closely to see if the cover will put resistance on the clip at install. Be safe, G
