Best paint over metal after rust removed?

I have some old rusted horse hames that I want to remove the heavy rust from and then paint them. Yes I know, crazy....

What is the best method in removing the rust (thinking of a wire drill brush or just getting them sand blasted)?

Also, what kind of paint/primer should I use? I will use rustoleum if I have too, but not a fan of it.

Yes I like old farm antiques, etc......

CLR for rust removal, then neutralize the acids with a scrub mix of baking soda and water, then plain water.

Any decent brand of primer afterwards, then your choice of paint.

Were they originally painted?

If not....clean as de-nag noted...or use vinegar with a little elbow grease....and then cover them with a light oil...and keep them oiled. Kinda like how you do cast iron pans.

If you really want to paint them....take them to a powder coat shop...they will sand blast and powder coat them

A good sandblast/powder coat on those pieces would cost quite a pretty penny, way to many edges, corners and crannies. Youd pay alot in labour just for prep

I personally have great results with Por-15 over rusted pieces like this, may cost you $60 to paint them properly with the product though, they sell a metal ready product to neutralize the rust and prep it, then whatever topcoat you desire from them, be sure to read about each top coat you are considering though, some are UV sensitive

On this piece a wire brush, The Works house hold cleaner containing Phosphoric acid and Rustoleum paint applied. Phosphoric acid seems to be the acid of choice to reduce rust for about 24 hours.

There are parts here at the ranch that were treated 10 years ago at least with no sign of rust re-occuring.

After I remove the rust, what's the best way/how do I clean the surface before I prime?
I'm getting some immediate rust spots appearing after I clean the rust off.
Do I rub the metal with mineral spirits?

If your parts are clean and dry with very light surface rust, just rub it off with 3M Scotchbrite. No need for any chemicals.

If you aren't going to paint in a while, just coat it with some oil and then do a final cleaning right before paint.
