The best method of installing new windows

We are in the process of getting quotas to change our windows. One contractor told us that the best way was to use Brick Molding whereas all the others are saying it is not necessary.

Brick molding is more expensive and I want to know if we should spend the extra money or not. Is it a better installation? Does it look better?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

It would help to know more about what you posted. Are you talking trim around the window or the exterior frame of the window?

I'm betting that you are looking at vinyl windows, but it really doesn't matter. If the outside measurement and the inside measurement are close to 1 inch, I would think that those that said no brick mould is needed are correct. The contractor that said it IS needed is probably either trying to use windows he already has, can get off the shelf, or is just trying to increase the price. You've done the first thing right... ask questions.

Maybe he's got extra brick mold available for either cheap or free (for him to use).

We generally install trim work to match whatever the existing trimwork is on a home.

Brick mold may be the "traditional" window csing, but it is not the considered "best" casing for windows.

NI, Probably the first question is what do you want it to look like. Most new homes I've seen in SWO have no brick mold. If you are replacing only some windows you want them to look symetrical and trim them like the originals. Drive around and look at newer homes, then look at homes in your neighbourhood that have had windows changed.
I have seen some really ugly flashing and oversized molding used to butt against siding and stucco and then ... there are the pro jobs. Look around and get referrals. Good windows are a good value, get an energy audit done first and you'll get some provincial rebate money as well, but they will tell you that in our area windows are a lower priority for energy savings..than insulation whereas window sales guys will tell you they're great

Where I live in Kitchener, we have several real manufacturers Golden Windows and Strassburger (vinyl),HD has several. Strassburger makes nice quality vinyl with virgin PVC which gives you a clean smooth finish.... good folks, but there is a lot of over priced crap out ther sold by hucksters with huge mark up and fast flying "discounts". Centennial has a rep for being very high priced, etc....buyer beware.n Shoot me a PM if you have questions

hey NI! ... I'm in ottawa as well ... planning on replacing several first floor windows this summer - I'd love to know how yours turn out. who's your contractor? are you doing any of the work yourself?
