Bayou Classic Turkey Fryer problem

I was going to post this to plumbing but didn't want to invoke a moderator.

Cooked another turkey on Thanksgiving using my turkey fryer. The recommended temperature of the oil is 350 degrees, however I was unable to achieve this temp. Maxed out at 330 degrees. As I turned up the gas the plate would begin to roar, a gap would start between the plate and blue flame. I would adjust the air mixture till gap disappeared and before any orange flamed tips appeared. But still no higher temp.

Anyone use one of these and what is the proper way to get temp higher? Propane tank was about half full. Wind wasn't blowing very hard, but put up a shield anyway.

Sorry don't have an answer for you other than to say "wind" is my biggest enemy with my fryer and sometimes with my smoker. Even with a wind-shield things sometimes go awry.:)

Does the fryer have a maximum size turkey you can cook?
Did you try to verify the temps with another thermometer?
Did the bird take longer to cook then you expected?

I used the thermometer that came with it and since I was getting frustrated double checked with my IR therm.

Oil never got any higher without turkey in it.

Turkey took about 20 minutes longer, with 35 pairs of eyes staring at me to finish...

Maybe the unit is defective.

Did you have your propane valve open all the way? On mine there is a second valve on the supply line to the burner, make sure that is open all the way too. I had a loose fitting last year, while I still got it up to temp, I lost a lot of fuel. :furious:

I may consider getting a new regulator and hose. Second stage to me could be better made.

Do not know. There is only one knob, the other is the shut off valve on the tank itself. So I am guessing sealed.

Ayuh,... That's not an adjustable regulator,.. Sorry...

If it were, you could turn up the gas flow abit...

I'm going to look online for a replacement.something with a better designed needle valve. A longer hose may be in order as well. Eventually, I will be running a black pipe line out of house under deck for grill, tiki torches and a heater. Connection for fryer seems like it puts it too close to combustibles/house.

Any recommendations?
