Bathroom cement board

What do you use on top of the tape for cement board in the shower area?? All I have is drywall compound but seems silly to close the seams of a water proof cement board with water permeable drywall compound.....what should I use to cover the tape and seal the seams?.

I beleive you are supposed to use the masic that you will stick the tile with. If I'm wrong someone will tell us.
