That is fine. There is a common misconception that you can't tile over drywall, when you can.
The whole issue of 'backer board' (Cement board) is that, it should be used in areas where there is direct water or high moisture. The top area of your shower (above the curtain or glass doors) will be fine with tile placed over your texture. Texture is comprised of the same material as wallboard. As stated, you can tile onto wallboard. It is done all the time in public bathrooms walls and private bathroom walls that don't get direct water/moisture.
