Automatic gate opener

Hi all,

The wife has been bugging me ever since we bought our house about 16 months ago to install an automatic gate opener. I'd like to finally start exploring our options.

It is a chain link fence (gate same material.) Standard 20-24 ft wide driveway. Gate is split into two halves that pivot (not slide) and can open in either direction (outward or inward). Diagram is attached (green is grass, black is fence & gate, grey is driveway, brown is flower beds.)

Goals for the gate opener:
- Convenience not security
- Both halves of the gate opened with one button push
- As it is the only exit at the front, it needs to be able to easily be manually opened by people without remotes from both sides of the fence (motion sensor, button, something)

Any recommendations for a DIY install? I've looked at the Mighty Mule gate openers and the reviews on them are mixed.

Automatic gate opener

I know this is an old thread, but..

Being in the automatic door field, I use to have access to tear out parts when new equipment was installed. About 20 years ago I had the same dilemma.. I wanted to automate my gate. It was a 16 foot swinging gate that pivoted and swung very easily.

I ended up taking a Stanley Magic Swing operator, intended for a pedestrian swing door, which is power open, spring closed, and mounting it on a pedestal, welded together with steel, near the hinge side of the gate. Use a 300 MHZ transmitter and receiver. Long, home made steel arm with a slide channed on the gate.Worked great, but being that it was spring closed, the wind would sometimes blow it open. To solve that, I took an old magnetic lock.. you know, the ones you see on security doors at hospitals and other businesses.. mounted opposite the hinge end and not only did it solve the wind problem, but it made the gate secure unless you had a transmitter or knew where the hidden magnetic switch was located. It has been in many years and has never failed, other than the transmitters or the hidden reed switch. Couldn't live without it now!

btw.. these automatic door parts show up on ebay from time to time...
