Attic venting

I have a new roof with a ridge vent. I also have two gable vents (powered). They were mounted to force the air out of the attic. My question is does this defeat the idea of the ridge vent. Should these both be drawing air in from outside. In addition, I also have a whole house fan.

Attic venting

Do you have soffit vents to go along with the ridge vent? Where is the whole house fan mounted? It works better directly exhausted to the outside with a shutter installed in the ceiling of the second floor.
You have a very odd setup. It's like they couldn't figure what to put in, so they put in everything.

Attic venting

Ridge vents are best used in conjucton with soffit level entry of fresh air. Combining ridge and gable vents have been shown to create dead areas of air in the attic. I don't recall the sites, but if you search around for attic ventilation, you will come across a few articles about the effectiveness ,or lack thereof, of venting combinations.

Attic venting

The whole idea is CROSS-VENTILATING the attic. Soffit vents in combination with ridge vents, turbines, conventional roof vents, or powered vents are all beneficial. More ventilation is a good thing.

If you don't have soffit vents, you're not cross-ventilating the attic.
