Attic Mold - Is it new or old?

When our house was built there was not sufficient ventallation in the attic which caused mold on the roof sheathing. We corrected the problem with a roof ridge vent and soffit vents. The roof sitll has black spots over large areas from the mold.
It has been several years. How can we tell if the mold is alive or dead? How can we remove the black spots to see if we did a good job with the ventillation and verify that new mold is not growing. It is a low roof which is hard to crawl around in.
We plan in selling the house in the future and want to avoid issues with mold when we do.
Right now money is tight, and we would prefer to DIY.

Thanks for any info.

Detergent solution and a scrub brush. Wear a respirator. You don't want to be breathing a large volume of the stuff. After cleaning, you can spray it with a fungicide. If it hasn't been treated before, it is likely dormant and will return in force at the first sign of new moisture. A good HEPA vac is a help where you can't reach.

While attic ventilation is usually a must, proper insulation of the floor and sealing all places where warm moist air escapes the house interior, is more important.

Another way to get rid of that mold........spray with a mixture of 10:1 water:bleach. Don't oversaok, just spray. That will kill most varieties.

Bleach isn't a real good detergent, but is highly effective as a fungicide. Spray it after you scrub and let dry.
