1/4 inch (6mm) Glass Stength?

First of all, Hi from Australia!
I'm trying to put a glass shelf together to go on the top of a cabinet and was wondering what sort of length I can span (horizontally) with a 1/4 inch thick glass sheet? My shelf is roughly 34 inches long by 11.5 inches wide. I'm just trying to work out what thickness of glass I will need to be strong enough to cover this distance. It will not be weight-bearing.

Anyone with advice would be most appreciated.

Regards, Kev

That shelf should span 36 inches with only end support. Light objects only.

My folks owned a gift shop--long ago, many of the display racks were 36".

I did collapse one when I over loaded it with jars of jelly, double stacked.--Mike--

For that length it may show some deflection from self weight. If light weight is not centered the deflection may not be that obvious. As a failsafe, 3/8" would be a better choice.

If you add a piece of 1/4 round trim along the back edge, it'd greatly improve strength.
If you have particle board on the back, use construction adhesive to attach instead of nails/screws.
