Wrought iron railing dimensions

I am rebuilding a exterior 4x12 2nd floor balcony on a 70+ year old stone house. I have replaced the beams and decking and now I am looking at the railing. Rather than just rebuild the wood railing, I was thinking of creating a wrought iron rail (I think its all steel these days), that would match some existing iron grille work. I have a gas welder, and I have found a local metal supply that has all the materials I need.

I was planning on a 36" rail height and 6" picket spacing. Are there codes that say what the minimum rail height and max picket spacing have to be?

The only mention I see in the building codes for railing (hand rail) is for stairs and ramps. Code calls for a 34" to 38" hand rail height. No mention of picket spacing. The existing window grills use 5 3/8" spacing. The 6" spacing I plan on is a close visual match and a good fit for the material length.

On the other hand, for safety, I would expect some max spacing so small children don't fall through. On a deck building website I see 4.5" max spacing called out, but not sure if that is arbitrary.

Spacing must be so that a 4" sphere can not pass between the railing/picket

Check with your local Inspector. CA- page #11: http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=...h1W5lElSFXE4_w

Which says 42" min rail height and 4" max picket opening. That would work out to 36" pickets on 4.5" centers with 1" top and bottom rail and a 4" bottom gap. This is 30% more metal than I want. It won't match as well to what is there already. A 20' stock length gives 7 @ 34".

Are kid's heads really as small as 4 inches? I thought the problem was kids were fatter than ever. Maybe I should just electrify the rail and keep everyone away:thumbsup:

Just eliminate the railing altogether. What's the worst that can happen?
Look at all the money you'll save then.
