Wood Trusses for storage space?
Hi all,
My home is an 80's ranch with a full basement. When you're in the basement and you look up, the plywood flooring of the upstairs is supported by wood trusses. These are not the regular 16 inch centered 2 x 8 or 2 x 10 like I'm used to. Instead, they are an actual truss that spans the full width of the home with no support poles in the basement. The trusses are made of 2x4's and look very much like the type of metal cross-braced trusses you see in large industrial buildings except mine are wood.
They are spaced 24 inches apart and they are about 22 inches tall. That's a lot of cubic feet of wasted space there!
My question: Can I store stuff up in between these trusses? I've been screwing in pieces of wood to the bottom of the trusses to create a kind of shelf so that I can put things up there. Camping equipment, old boxes of stuff, etc etc.
Is there any problem with this? I'm not storing heavy stuff.. just normal household crap we don't use much anymore.
