wood siding question
I have a 90 year old garage that I am re-siding. It has textured wood shingles on it. I found a very similar shingle at Home Depot that come in bundles. They aren't the smooth kind but rather they have a textured (grooved) finish to them.
My garage has alot of 1 x 6 trim on it that has been removed. This trim runs along the roof edges and around the garage doors.
I notice that on the vertical pieces the shingles butt right up against the edge of the trim but on the pieces that follow along the roof edges part of the shingles were under the trim. Because of this, the original builder installed blocks along the roof edge as a nailer for the trim so that it would be even with the wall.
Doing it this way eliminated the need to angle cut the shingles to match the edge of the fascia board that runs along the roof edges.
What is the proper way for me to do this? Should I install the 1 x 6 trim first and then shingle up to the edge of it and make all the cuts?
Also, the original shingles on the corners were butted up against each other beautifully. I was thinking about installing 1 x 3 trim on each corner so that I could butt the shingles up against it. It would also protect the edges better for me.
I searched for tutorials online but with no luck. thanks.. jg

jg...that piece of trim was blocked out to cover the edge of the shingles and keep to water from getting behind tthem. If I were you I would duplicate that detail.

Corner boards would be fine. Its somewhat of an art to weave corners.

Pad out at roof line then install 1x3 or wider frieze board, then slide the shakes behind the frieze. Much nicer finish.
As for the corners, corner boards are ok but if you really want to be a craftsman, do the weave.

Mitered shingle corners…..what fun. Not a project for one with a short fuse.

Sure looks good though.:)
