Hello, This is my first go round at building a greenhouse, so you will have to excuse me. Need some help. What height does the ridge board have to be to get a standard door installed? My greenhouse is 8'3"x15'8". Wall height is 5'8". I was going to go with a 10/12 roof pitch. Will I have enough height between the rafters for a standard 32" door? I understand a rough opening height is 82 1/2". Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the reply. I saw a plan in a greenhouse book. They had the 4x4's at 3'9". Thought that was way to low as I am 5'6". But they had a 45 degree roof pitch.
Joe, 4x4 posts for walls, 18" in the ground. The plan called for 3'9" side walls with a 45 degree pitch. There door was only 5'6" so that's why I increased the height
On a 10/12 pitch you will not have enough room for a full height 2/8 door, even with a 12/12 pitch you won't. You may have to lengthen your side walls to get a full height 2/8 door.
6666 well thank god it I wasn't your 666 reply!!:furious:
Thanks for the info. My thinking was I went 2 foot taller then the plan and 10/12 being 10" for every foot rise, I would be at around 7'8"=92". Giving me 10" spare. Hmmmm guess not then. So it's either taller side walls or make my own door. Thanks again. Im coming back as a man the next go around. Ha
Please go back and add you location to your profile.
18" is not near enough depth for the post either.
They need to be at least set below the frost line. I'd set them a minimum of 24" even if there was no frost line.
It would also need a double top plate on top of the walls to support the roof.
Thanks Joe, I just posted location. Florida. Guy friend told me 18" is fine for this area that it would never see that frost here. Will add another top plate then. I'm using Polycarbonate panels not glass.
This plan was designed by the University of Connecticut for snow loads. We of course don't have the white stuff here but thought it would hold up to a mini hurricane if need be.
I went back and refigured it again, it will fit, you may have to watch the rafter there at the door, I don't know if you will have to notch it or not, I haven't figured that far yet. We are having some bad storms right now.
Thanks Jim. Good News 4 sure!! Yes we also are having some bad storms. Well if I can't have a 32" door I would settle for a 30" as long as the height is good. Big smiles....
A note to Jim and others---Jes is considering a screen door--not a prehung door---so the R.O. is smaller---I haven't checked an actual screen door--but the height can be less if needed ,by adjusting the door bottom plate---
Thanks Mike. Yes for sure on the screen door. I can always cover it with the polycarbonate panel for the winter. Well give me much need ventilation for the summer. Have I told you, you guys are awesome!!
In Florida, you will be just fine with the screen door---
My folks has a temporary green house over their fish pond in the winter--
with a screen door and double plastic over the green house hoops---
The solar gain was enough to keep the room above freezing on all but the coldest days--Keeping you green house cool might be a bigger issue.
See if you have a greenhouse supply place in your area---they will stock rolls of woven sunshade fabric---that might be needed over the roof in the warmer months.
My key board is full of saw dust--forgive the missing letters-----
