Windows? (Good or bad?)

In today's new homes are having a lot of windows a good thing or bad, when it comes to energy efficiency?

What part of the country will the house be built in? (hot area or colder area)

Most energy efficient windows only have about an R-3 insulation value. Most walls of a house could have from R-13 to R-19+.

How many windows will face south?

Wow! That's a HUGE difference.

Facing the house south in a colder climate will give you heat gain from the sun. Locate more windows on the south side and less on the other sides to lower heat lose thru the windows.

A southern facing house in warmer climates means that you will get more unwanted heat gain from the sun resulting in more A/C use. Locate more windows in the sides that doesn't face the sun.
