Window well installation
1 Attachment(s)
Im about to replace the well (yes - Im replacing the window too).

1) How far above and below grade should I be?
2) If I run the aluminum well up to the top of the window just below the siding I have about 8 inches above grade and 4 of 5 below the sill. Is that what is typically done - run it up to the siding?

Thanks for the advice.

Sounds normal, and are you about to finish the basement?

Be safe, G

yes, all I have left are the windows.

Just wanted to make sure you are safe in the new space. Code requires a second access out of the basement other than the stairs . If a new bedroom is made, an egress (escape) window is required. This could also serve as the basements' egress.
But the basement window can be minimum 5 sq. ft. if at grade egress.
This will let a fireman with all gear on access anyone trapped in basement from smoke or fire.
Be safe, Gary

I finished the job - it was not too difficult - definitely a DIY job . A couple of things I learned;

1) rent a hammer drill - it will cost a few dollars more but you can drill your holes in a few minutes rather than burning out your home drill or destroying your bit.
2) Buy more bags of crushed stone than you think you need.
3) Same goes for construction adhesive - also, wear gloves - it doesnt come off skin like paint.

GBAR--just for my education, as we don't have basements, would this type window installation with well qualify as an "egress" as you stated? Having been "fire-fighter" trained with SCBA pack on, could a fireman get to and through this window? It just looks small to me for a fireman with full turn-out gear on. Thanks, David

Fireman would not fit but i have a door on the other side that leads to the backyard.
