Window installed over tile / new tile

We recently had new windows installed and unbeknown to me in advance, when they installed the windows in the kitchen and bath, they did so over the existing tile.

First, I'm wondering if that's normal or if there's something I should be concerned about?

Second, I'm wondering if when I got to retile my kitchen and bath (the shower) I can just tile over this tile rather than removing it, or if I'm going to have to remove the windows to do the job sufficiently?

I always run the tile behind the trim. I cut a rabbet in the trim. Then I caulk it well.
If you re-tile, I always remove the old tile and put new backerboard in too
