Window doesn't close

Apologies if this is in the wrong sub-forum, but it seemed to be the best fit.

Our house (1930's rowhome, gutted in 2004 by previous owner) has the same vinyl double-pane windows throughout. The 2004 rennovation was done acceptably, but the work was generally sloppy, if functional. We have been in the house about a year, and during that time the front window has not been able to latch. The top pane and the bottom pane can go to their respective places, and it gets close enough that the latch can sort of friction hold it together, but it's not seated properly in the groove it should be to lock the window. This is a bit of a security problem, as you might imagine (not that a fully latched latch would be terribly secure, but it's better than nothing).

The window frame looks like it's seated properly (at least without ripping out the drywall), and this is the same window as all the others in the house, so presumably they work just fine. I'm at a loss for what might be going wrong or how to fix it. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks!

It could be that the window is not square in the opening. Basically the window is a rhombis, not a rectangle.
Close the window and look at it from the outside. If one side is touching the bottom sill and the other side has a gap, the window was installed improperly. You would need to reinstall the window to fix the issue.

Not an easy way to figure this out without physically seeing/handling the window,but a couple of possible fixes;

Try pushing the top sash up with a little more force.Sometimes,depending on the type of replacement,they will get hung up on the upper frame.
Look for obstructions in side channels where the valance is,maybe the screw to secure the window to the frame is backed out.
Check the sill and header to make sure there are no bows in them.Put a straight edge on them for checking.
Also check each sash for same.
Make sure the pin for the pivot point of the sash during tilting is securely imbedded in the mechanism.

If you see something that doesn't look right,come back and post what you find.

I'll go take a look. Hopefully it's something else, so I don't have to rip out the whole thing :-/

That's a good trick. I'll do that. Thanks.
