Window A/C Unit installed in a wall

I'm looking to install and window a/c unit on the side of my house in a wall. i was woundering if anyone done thi before and had any thoughts? alos would i have to install a header and everything like i would with a window? What kind of supports if any should i have for the a/c unit? thank you

I installed 2 units in wall at my last house, one was a window unit
There was an exisiting hole in the wall from an old AC

This house I have built 2 into the wall
I built a framed opening much like you would for a window
So yes, header & a 2x fully supported w/cripple studs for the AC to sit on

I'll be building insulated framed/trimmed boxes to cover them from the inside in the winter

what do you mean by a crippled stud. i framed things out before and installed windows before so i can fram out the opening pretty easy but i just didn't know what you meant by a cripple stud. thank you

For a small AC only 2 cripple studs under the sill plate is probably needed
Also called jack studs & maybe other names...

Frame it like a window per Scuba Dave's sketch.
Just on a techincal note. Installing the unit in the wall will often violate the code restriction against mechanical equipment in the lot's side line setbacks. If the wall is in your back yard, no problem. This is done all the time, mostly with no problems, but I know of neighbors who have filed complaints against this when the unit happened to be at their adjacent bedroom window and they did not like hearing it; just a thought if you have cranky neighbors.
