width of fireplace wall w/ brick & mantel

I am in the process of building a house. The plans call for a 36" prefab fireplace on a 5' wide bump out wall. I would like a raised brick hearth and brick surround with the basic painted white mantel w/ legs. I don't think I have enough room for the brick surround and mantel on a 5' wall do I...??? I need all the room I can get because I am planning on putting cabinets/shelves on both sides of f.p.

The fireplace unit has clearances listed in the instructions. What do they say?

They say 1' min clearance for combustibles....but the pictures on their website definetly don't show 1' between fp and mantel.....I was hoping someone would chime in that had the set-up or has built the set-up I am looking at.....the surround doesn't have to be brick, it can be black slate w/ wooden mantel w/ legs but most of the mantels I see online are wider than 5'...??? Is my plan not going to work???

Pictures in brochures don't trump directions or building codes. Have you contacted your local building department?

Actually after looking at another spec sheet from a different manuf. it allows combustible material 1/2" from outside of fireplace (of course i would have non-combustible until where mantel starts), I knew all the pictures can't be wrong......so m y question is one of asthetics,......I guess I can figure out I have 1' on each side of 36" fp going w/ a 5' wall,.....is this enough for a surround of some sort and a mantel w/ legs??? or would it look/be too tight???? thanks if anyone can help

Mock up the scenario in cardboard and see if it looks okay.
