Why no one likes insulated crawlspaces

State NJ- Architect design has open crawlspace, on North cold facing wall. He does not want to change the design. I don't want freezing pipes on the coldest days. My mason does not seem keen on an insulated crawlspace either?? Why?

What is the addition being connected to?

If the answer is a conditioned full basement, I would insulate the exterior of foundation and not vent it. Ask the mason what the code is on this in your area.

PS, nice screen name.................

I will have to run the code by the mason, I think he just wants to get started and not have to wait for changes. Funny screen name choices but I don't think we are related! I would think an insulated crawlspace would be better

Nobody, but nobody builds open crawl spaces here in Canada.
Crawl spaces should be conditioned air space!

Insulated crawlspaces are certainly the norm here as well, and I have no idea what benefit a non-insulated crawlspace may have in NJ especially if it's connected to an existing conditioned basement.

IF the crawlspace is properly vented AND the insulation's in place to keep your tootsies warm when walking over it, its no big deal.

THAT being said, few are properly done 'cause most don't understand them OR the why's & are cheapskates to boot

if you hear it from a guy in the apron store, be VERY suspicious the mtl/method will work,,, when it time to build something together, they won't answer phones NOR help

I agree ALL crawlspaces should be conditioned and be treated as part of your house! I would definitely place rigid foam board along your foundation walls and encapsulate your crawlspace.
