Where Cedar Siding Meets Shingles?

My roof is split into two slightly different elevations, with cedar siding on the wall where the two meet up. During re-roofing I removed the siding here to install new step flashing, and the old stuff is to deteriorated to put back in-place.

My question is what can I do to extend the life of the replacement siding? The former installation had the siding butting into the shingles tightly, but those ends were the most deteriorated. I'm wondering if I should leave a 1/2" gap between siding and shingles... this would leave the step flashing slightly exposed, but It won't that junction is difficult to see from the ground, so I'm not worried about the visual.

Any tips?

Absolutely hold up the siding. I usually hold it up ” so there is enough room for another roof over and the siding will still be off the roof. ” is ok too.

I lay a 1x board or a strip of plywood on the roof (what ever is laying around) and cut the siding tight to that then slip out the board and you’ll have a nice clean line off the roof.

Seeing the step flashing is fine as long as your also seeing a straight line of siding.

Thanks for confirming this!

I love the look of the untreated, naturally aged wood, but I'm afraid the exposed edge might be a weak spot... I've got some "danish oil finish" I could brush on those ends (not the face) ... bad idea?

Oil is just fine.
