What's the best way to extend 2x4's vertically?

I'm working on putting lattice atop the gate of a fence I just built. I had originally planned on not putting lattice above the gate so I cut the 2x4's used for the vertical sides of the gate to be even with the fence boards. Now I'd like to extend those 2x4's to give me something extra to attach the lattice to and also place a 2x4 on the top. The lattice is 1 foot high. What options do I have other than toenailing? Is there a simple way to securely extend those boards 13.75 inches?

No, it is not exactly square. But it's much better than what the neighbor had planned for our "good neighbor" fence!

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

EDIT: Added details

Do it over. It's only a handful of 2x4's to be cut to the correct length.
The rest of the materials can probably all be reused.

That's what I ended up doing this afternoon, Tarheel.

Thanks for the reply.
