What would you do with this?

This is my basement door. It doesn't stay shut very well at all and looks horrendous. I want to replace it. A contractor told me he would just cap off the sides with j-channel and get a new door. The wood looks pretty bad to me though so I think it might need to be replaced. How would you guys go about fixing this? In my limited knowledge I'd think to remove the wood with a recip saw and attach a new rough opening somehow to the concrete (??) then put up a new exterior prehung door. Does this make sense or is it ok to cap it off? What would you do if its your house?

I would rip out the whole door. Frame in a new one as needed. If you get a new prehung door it will come with everything you need including the jambs and at least one side of casing

Miller is correct. Tear out the whole thing, rebuild RO if necessary, and install pre-hung door

I've installed split jambs before, but they are usually vertical....... REPLACE!
