What type of siding is best for location etc..?

Hello,

My wife and I will be re-siding a 200 yr old wood plank (Federal style) house soon. We live in upsate NY where it can be very windy and wet and the south side (front) gets full sun. So does anyone have any ideas on what siding may be best?

We already said no to wood as too expensive. We originally wanted LP Smartsiding but were told to stay away from them. I know they had a huge lawsuit back in the 90’s but it seems they may have learned from their mistakes? My wife is afraid of any kind of vinyl because of the southern exposure and warping. I looked into insulated vinyl (e.g. craneboard) and am wondering if that would be better in full sun? My father said we may want to try James Hardy fiber cement siding, but from what I have read it seems you need special equipment and it is very time consuming and scrolling through forums they too came with problems.

Well I really appreciate any advice. Kind of at wits end what siding to use.

Ryan

Isn’t that the sad truth.

Vinyl is the best if you’re talking to a Vinyl Rep.

Hardi is the best if you’re talking to a Hardi Rep.

When Vinyl Guy switches over to his new job with Hardi, his pitch will too.

Stay away from any siding that claims intelligence.

I like wood.
