what is this stuff on the wood?

i pulled off some drywall for some exploratory demolition. Almost all the studs and joists (any framing members) have these translucent droplets of golden yellow stuff all over it. Looks like flux or sap or something.

anyone know what it is?

(this is a picture of ceiling joists).

How old is your house?

I have a 103 year old house, and various wooden pieces have it. I'm pretty sure it's amber (dried sap).

I also had a ton of the black specks that you see in your pic. In my case, they were mouse turds. The mouse skeletons grossed me out as well (fun when they fall on your head).

i don't know exactly how old, but its something in the vicinity of 60~70yrs old.

so old wood secretes sap?

bout the black stuff, I'll have to take a closer look. I remember thinking why there were so many black & white pepples there. I thought it might be pepples from the roofing. I hope its not mouse droppings, the entire ceiling is covered with it.

I also second mouse turds, had them and the skeletons in my attic, found them while I was adding insulation. My therory is that we had so little insulation up there that the mice where enjoying all the heat that was escaping our living space in the winter. After adding more insulation and ventilation its much colder up there in the winter and I havnt found any evidience of freeloading mice.

i checked again, definitely looks like pebbles. Droppings will be more like pellets.

anyway, back on topic, so it's normal for wood to be secreting sap?

Yes, It can and does happen (sometimes).

Notice how all the drops are running out of the light grain lines.

Yeah...I have some steps to somebodies pool deck that I took apart
I re-used the stairs for my hot tub out by the pool
They have to be at least 10 years old
And in the recent heat they are now secreting sap....but only 1 stair - 2 boards
I've been using a scraper to scrape it up

It's sap. At that age house it should be rock hard. Mouse droppings are black and look like caraway seeds.
