What is the smallest shower that code will allow?
It is late on a Friday night (my local building inspections dept. is closed until Monday---and I will phone them);however, I want to use the week-end thinking how I can enlarge a 1/2 bath (toilet & vanity) into a bath with toilet, vanity & shower. Space is a problem, so I need a small shower. --I believe that code, at one time, allowed a shower as small as 32" X 32" square---Has that changed? ---Does the most recent code require a minimum of 36" X 36" ---or is 32" X 32" still the minimum? Again, I could wait until Monday to phone local code people; but, I want to start drawing plans this week-end (I enjoy drawing plans). --An answer to my question would be most appreciate. ---Jaes.:)

Per 2003 IRC figure 307.2, the minimum shower stall allowed is 30x30". You must have 24" clear space outside the entry to the shower.

I don't have an '06 IRC at home, so I can't tell you if the ICC changed that for '06, but I don't recall it changing.

If you need anything else let me know.

Thanks for fast reply.
Thanks, thekctermite. The 30 X 30" minimum is great news--now, I can play around with my computer program that helps me with room layouts. ---I will, however, still check with the local building Inspections Monday---occassionally they can have different or odd requirements. --Again, thanks and have a good week-end. ---Jaes.:)

Yes, definately check to be sure. They might not be under the I-codes. Or, the inspector might have a burr in his saddle for some reason and not allow them that small. You never know.

I did a corner job once real small, but "standard" was at a lake house so the "codes" were a bit non-existent. The corner unit allowed for the door clearance.
Believe as the kctermite says, we had a 30" corner base out of the box.
Try to fit something standard, base the space or a full tile job obviously is the only choice.
sounds like a tough - fit good luck
