what size header for eve side garage doors?

I'm building a 28X30' garage with an apt. above, using 2x6 exterior walls. I plan on putting in 2 overhead garage doors, one 9'x9' and one 8'x9', on the eave end of the garage. What size header would be correct for each door? Snow load is a factor, this will be built in Vermont. And I'm planning on 10' ceiling and assuming I'll need to use low clearance garage doors for this.

These headers weren't specified in the plans? I hope there's enough room for the proper header in the space you have available. You might need to use LVL's to get enough support for the span considering the ceiling to opening relationship.

what size header for eve side garage doors?

I just built a 24x36 garage with a great room above, then a walk up attic
Doors in the 24' side 9x7
They spec'd out (2) 2x12 LV's
Support on either end & the middle
Lumber company did the calc for free... I did buy the LVL's from them but months later

But you really can't go by what someone else builds
You need to have someone calc the loads to determine what size is needed
Someone just posted a thread where they have 18" LVL's sagging due to an incorrect load calc

Dave,
if I understand the OP's situation correctly, they are asking about having the doors on the 'eve' or truss-bearing side of the garage which would place a tremendous load on the door header. Your situation is different. If I recall, your doors are gable end???

vtboy51, what is the snow load in your area? Phone a local truss plant or the local building inspector's office to find out.

The snow load is going to be a big factor, this is being build in Vermont, near the Canadian border, lots of snow/wind. And you are correct I was hoping to put the doors on the "truss bearing wall". I'll contact the truss company and see what info they can offer.

Ah...I've always heard that end called the gable end
In my case there is a wall directly above the garage doors - Great room over
Since he indicated he was having an Apt above the garage I thought he would also have a weight bearing wall over the doors
